Search Engine Optimisation News

It can be hard for small businesses to know how to market themselves online effectively, or gather the resources to do so, however, search engine optimisation (SEO) is a straightforward way such firms can attract a localised customer base.

In an Econsultancy blog post, Matt Owen said that the majority of SEO guidance is aimed at larger businesses, meaning it is hard for small enterprises to know the best ways to increase traffic to their sites.

However, there are some simple steps such firms can take to market themselves effectively. According to Mr Owen, the first step is to assess the competition by performing some quick keyword searches with local names, checking which firms show up and seeing what their websites look like.

When companies are ready to start working on their own site, the first thing to focus on is location, location, location. Mr Owen recommended that firms have their address listed on each page, so that search engines can pick it up easily, and also suggested adding district names in, being as specific as possible while still sounding natural.

Small companies are also advised to add themselves to Google Places, Bing Local Listing and Yahoo Business Local, as a growing number of people are searching for businesses using Google Maps or direct from iPhone and mobile maps.

Social media can also be useful for small firms keen to boost their online presence. In his blog post, Mr Owen suggested starting a Facebook group or using Twitter to advertise promotions or links to coupons.

Finally, the blogger emphasised the importance of businesses listing themselves with trade groups, as this will lead to them having more mentions and links across the web and contribute towards organic SEO growth.

In a blog post earlier this month, Mr Owen said that many small companies are yet to fully embrace social media, despite the fact that using social networks can give firms a huge marketing boost.
