Social Media Optimisation News

Search engine marketing and social media are very closely connected, according to experts at Econsultancy.

The digital marketing and ecommerce community's senior research analyst Jake Hird said that the two mediums can be used together, with social media helping to boost search engine optimisation (SEO) efforts.

"The two are very closely connected," he said.

"If you have a social media presence you're more likely to be visible in a search result because of the authority of the site."

Mr Hird continued to say that social media can also help with link building and boosting online presence, while blogging, which is itself a form of social media, can help push websites up the rankings by boosting their "natural search visibility".

He added that social media sites such as Facebook are also increasingly making use of advertising techniques which are traditionally associated with search engine marketing, for example paid-for ads that are placed on the right-hand side of the screen.

If SEO marketers are considering incorporating social media into their campaigns, they may wish to start with Twitter, which, according to Econsultancy's UK Search Engine Marketing Benchmark Report, is the most used social media marketing tool in the UK.

It was found that 81 per cent of businesses use Twitter to market themselves, compared to 78 per cent who use Facebook.

The latest Experian Hitwise data also highlighted the benefits of combining social media and search marketing efforts, with the two mediums combined accounting for 23.11 per cent of UK internet visits in May 2010.

And with the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organisation finding that the anticipated rise in social media budgets represents one of the biggest opportunities for search engine marketers this year, maybe now is time to consider what impact it could have.
