Search engine marketing 'the only way to get noticed'

Search Engine Optimisation News

Search engine marketing is increasingly becoming the only way to get noticed, it has been claimed. According to website optimisation expert and journalist Rebecca Lieb, the huge number of companies vying to get to the top of Google means that successful search engine optimisation is vital if individuals want to stand out from the crowd.

Speaking to CTV.ca, Lieb said: "Search is increasingly becoming the only viable way for us to go through the glut of information we have created."

"If you are selling goods and services or you want people to find you, and they can't find you, well they will find your competitor. So, it's not really a choice anymore if you want to play this game," she noted.

Lieb concluded that you either get in on the action and hone your search engine marketing strategy – or you fall behind your competitors and end up losing out on business.

She also highlighted the hugely detrimental impact of using an entirely graphic webpage or incorporating interactive tools such as flash in favour of tried-and-test search marketing-savvy HTML content.

"Google can't read that page on the website," she explained.

She added that if Google can't read a website it will not be able to get around the problem – it will just give up. And as a direct result the website will drop out of Google's search engine results pages.

But it is not just Google that a website has to please if it is to become an effective search engine marketing tool. There are other search engines to consider as well – including Yahoo and Microsoft's Bing.

And as internet access goes increasingly mobile, there could be a huge shift in which search engines people are accessing. This could easily boost or hinder existing search engine marketing strategies if firms don't consider Google's main rivals.

Recently Business Week reported that iPhone creator Apple could drop Google entirely and replace it with Bing on its mobile operating system. While the move doesn't seem like much, it could result in hundreds of thousands of internet users changing their default search engine. And any SEO agency which doesn't take Bing into account could lose access to these vital consumers.
