Search engine giant Google's drive to be the dominant global brand in the world of search marketing has hit its first hurdle.

The firm's website optimisation strategy in China is in jeopardy after officials objected to its efforts to avoid censorship controls in place in the country.

It is expected that the Chinese government, which presides over the largest marketing of internet users on the planet, will revoke Google's operating licence.

Google has been avoiding censorship issues in the country by directing users from its Chinese landing page to one based in Hong Kong, where restrictions are much less draconian.

Writing in a blog posting, website optimisation legal expert David Drummond said: "Google would effectively go dark in China."

"It's clear from conversations we have had with Chinese government officials that they find the redirect unacceptable."

The ramifications for any SEO agency running website optimisation strategies in China could be huge if Google is thrown out of the country.

"That's a prospect dreaded by many of our Chinese users, who have been vocal about their desire to keep Google.cn alive," Drummond claimed.

Google is doing its best to hold onto its Chinese licence, however, and has claimed that it will stop redirecting Chinese internet traffic to its Hong Kong site.

The relationship between Google and the Chinese government has always had its problems. Google even threatened to pull out of the country entirely in January after it became victim of a sophisticated cyber attack that originated there.

Cybercriminals hacked into the email accounts of a number of Chinese activists as well as attacking Google's - and several other US firm's - infrastructure.

At this point Google decided to redirect its web traffic from China to its Hong Kong-based site.

Earlier this year, Google announced its intention to take search into people's living rooms by launching a new service - Google TV.

The announcement came on May 20th, and if followed through would allow marketers to put pay per click advertising on people's television sets.

Google TV is based on the company's mobile operating system - known as Android.
