Search engine giant Google has teamed up with the US government's Small Business Administration to provide growing businesses with hints and tips on SEO.

The firm's new Tools for Online Success incorporate an array of online resources and training guides that can help companies harness the power of successful search engine marketing.

Google and the US government's online toolkit for everything SEO follows hot on the heels of the publication of The Yahoo Style Guide.

The guidance offered by Yahoo promised to provide marketing professionals with the ultimate advice for writing, editing and publishing digital content. Yahoo claimed that for the past 15 years, writers and programmers have had to head to multiple online sources for search engine optimisation hints and tips and the creation of a universal style guide will make their jobs far easier.

Google's SEO advice agenda is similar to Yahoo's, however, instead of being in book format, all the guidance is located online. The company is hoping to become a one-stop shop for SEO and search engine marketing advice, as well as raising standards in the industry.

Aimed mainly at small firms, Google's advice focuses on location-based searches.

John Hanke, vice-president of product management at Google, said: "One fifth of searches on Google are related to location, which shows that people are looking to the internet to make decisions about where to go and what to do in their daily lives.

"We want to connect our users with the businesses that provide the goods and services they need, but the first step is for those businesses to have an online presence."

Meanwhile, the US Small Business Administration's Karen Mills said the internet is becoming the first port of call for people when they search for traditional high street businesses, making SEO a vitally important tool.

"With these Tools for Online Success, we can ensure these small businesses reach new markets and customers so they can continue to create jobs," she added.

If anything, the creation of the online resource shows that the world of search engine optimisation is constantly evolving and needs a considerable amount of time and effort to keep up-to-date with.

Recently, Google updated its universal search interface after extensive testing and reminded SEO companies and their customers that they will continue to update both the look and feel of their service, as well as the search engine algorithms that underpin it. This means staying abreast of the latest search engine marketing techniques is more important than ever.
