A company's search engine optimisation efforts can be affected by how well their website is rendered on mobile phone handsets, it has been claimed.

According to SEO industry expert and founder of Rank-Mobile Cindy Krum, Google and other search engine algorithms - such as those from Yahoo and Microsoft - take into account how a website loads when it is being displayed on a portable device such as a phone.

Writing for Search Engine Land, Krum said that as a result firms need to ensure that the SEO (search engine optimisation) strategies take into account optimisation for mobile search.

She suggested that creating a secondary mobile style sheet could resolve the issue and boost a firm's search engine marketing efforts.

Existing websites do not have to be rebuilt to work on mobile devices if the company has already taken a modular, style sheet led approach.

Krum also claimed that creating a separate mobile site map was an essential as it would make web crawlers' jobs easier - which could also result in improved search engine results page rankings.

She also highlighted the impact clean and efficient coding has on a websites search engine ranking.

"Sloppy HTML or bad JavaScript can really cause problems on some mobile browsers and can also impact download and rendering time of pages," she told the website.

Earlier this month, search engine marketing expert Penny Sansevieri claimed that there are a number of website design barriers that can hinder a firm's SEO campaigns, including the widespread use of flash and the implementation of poor quality JavaScript.

But one of the main failings was the lack of a site map on a large number of websites, which was a common issue faced by firm's wanting to boost their search engine ranking, she added.

She also re-iterated the importance of offering high-quality content to browsers on every single webpage of a site.
