Search Engine Optimisation News
Visual search engine optimisation (SEO) could soon become an integral part of many businesses' digital marketing strategies.
Speaking to the BBC's click programme recently, Google's product manager for computer vision products Aparna Chennapragada said that visual search is a particular focus for the company at present.
And in a world in which digital marketing and website promotion is dominated by Google rankings, when the web-crawling specialist announces that visual SEO (search engine optimisation) is important, it pays to listen.
According to Ms Chennapragada, digital content is becoming more and more visual as the web - and complex internet-based applications - continue to develop.
"A few years ago it would have been unthinkable to say that we can get machines to process and recognise faces as well as humans do, but we're pretty close right now," Ms Chennapragada told Click.
"We're actually pretty good at seeing and recognising. That's what we want versus having to describe in words and trying to recall what we're searching for," she added.
Google is already developing a range of visually-orientated search products, such as Google Goggles - which lets users find out more information about landmarks, books, artworks, places and wine by simply snapping a picture of them on a mobile phone.
Google Goggles will add to the firm's growing portfolio of search-related products and undoubtedly change the way professional marketers approach search marketing and website optimisation.
The firm is already touting its new Social Search returns as the next big thing in internet use. The new technology allows users to search content posted by friends on social networking sites, blog articles and status updates.
According to the firm, the social aspect of its search facility allows internet users to find customer reviews much more easily - an excellent tool for firms that have received a swathe of positive feedback, for example in the hospitality sector.
And with social media being dubbed a marketing channel in its own right by a number of leading industry experts, it seems like it will only be a matter of time before visual search becomes a platform that can be used to boost firms' internet presence.
