Digital economy bill 'will determine online environment'
December 10th 2009
The government's proposed laws for the UK's digital sector will mould the digital age in this country now and for years to come, the All-Party Parliamentary IP (Intellectual Property) Group has said.
Pete Wishart MP, secretary of the group, said that the decisions made on the digital economy bill in parliament "will go a long way to determining the online environment" and could shape the direction it takes in the next generation.
Speaking as chair of the Westminster eForum and Media Forum keynote seminar the Future of Content Online, Mr Wishart described the bill as "perhaps the most significant piece of legislation that we've had since the digital age".
He also stressed the bill's importance for addressing the "factions that the internet has created", adding that the internet had challenged the "cosy assumptions" about the relationship between content providers, distributors and consumers.
The Westminster eForum and Media Forum keynote seminar, which took place in London yesterday (December 8th), was intended to assess the future for realising the value of online content.
