Firms must ensure their search engine optimisation (SEO) efforts extend to their images, one expert advises.

Optimising images for search engines can help bring more traffic to the site and keep visitors interested, explains PR and SEO expert Mihaela Lica.

Keywords should be used in image file names and separated with dashes, not underscores, she points out, and image ALT attributes and title tags should also contain keywords.

When it comes to incorporating images on the site, they should be placed in the immediate vicinity of keyword-related content, the expert continues.

"The cool factor of a good image has an important psychological impact on the reader: images make the visitor stay and remember the page via associations," Ms Lica points out.

SEO(search engine optimisation) must also be used on landing pages, marketing commentator Mikal E Belicove said in an article for Entrepreneur.com last week.

He suggested that five to seven keywords be used in the meta tag for the page and "authentically" used in the copy.
