The popularity of internet-ready smartphones are a sign that mobile websurfing may soon overtake fixed-line connections, according to a new report.

A study by mobileSQUARED predicts that from 2011 the number of total broadband connections in the UK will be 42.7 million, marginally higher than the predicted 42.5 million fixed-line broadband users.

Chris Marling, editor of Broadband Genie, said: "It has become a fantastic tool for getting online on the move, but signal drops and slow connections really blight the service - not to mention small screen sizes and fiddly web surfing.

"Fixed-line is still setting the agenda for broadband speed."

He pointed out that new products will rely on the reliability of fixed-line, because "3D and 360 degree TV are going to need fast, stable speeds to make them work".

Forty million 3G-capable smartphones were sold in the UK in the second quarter of 2009 - a growth of 27 per cent.
