Google's Chrome operating system, which aims to make internet access faster and easier, could be available for download within a week.
Technology website TechCrunch reported that the Chrome OS could be available imminently, after Google itself said it would "open-source its code" late this year.
In its official blog, Google described the Google Chrome Operating System as a "natural extension" of Google Chrome - the browser launched in early 2009.
It added that speed, simplicity and security were the key aspects of Chrome OS, which was designed to be fast and lightweight in order for users to get on to the web in a few seconds.
"It's our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be," Google added.
And the operating system, first announced in July, could pose the first real competition to Microsoft's monopoly, according to Computer Weekly.
Open-source and lightweight, Google Chrome will first be targeted at netbooks in the second half of 2010.
