Social media can play a key role in driving traffic to websites and improving search engine optimisation(SEO), according to a new white paper.
Businesses can boost SEO (search engine optimisation) simply by linking active social profiles on high-ranking websites such as Facebook or Twitter to their homepage, according to business software firm Sage.
Social bookmarking services such as Digg and Delicious can also improve visibility, with firms urged to think carefully about their choice and deployment of keywords and phrases on social media sites, to attract appropriate prospects and customers.
Sage also urges businesses to explore their social media customer base before jumping in, to ensure that they understand the tone and style of the channels that they are working with.
The white paper has been published alongside a survey of 4,000 Sage customers, which found that only 8.4 per cent of businesses are using social media to learn more about their customers online.
