Businesses should tackle 'duplicate content'

October 09th 2009

Duplicate content can make it harder for search engines to crawl and index web pages on a website, according to Google.

Although not always a problem, duplicate content could begin to have an impact on search engine optimisation (SEO) if left unmanaged over time.

Google's webmaster trends analyst John Mueller explained that one of the problems can be that information found via incoming links can be diffused across different pages.

This can mean businesses preferred pages are actually ranked lower in search results than they might want and could even result in a less preferred page being ranked higher.

In a post on the Google Webmaster Central Blog, Mr Mueller indicates that the most important step is recognising where duplicate content occurs, which can be achieved by simply searching a snippet of text from a page and seeing what comes up.

Google recently launched a new parameter handling tool to help webmasters detect and manage duplicate content, allowing site owners to view which parameters Google believes should be ignored or not during website crawls.
